q: What do you like about black and white film photography and why?
a: I’ve always been fascinated by b&w photography and I’m still astonished by what you can express with this simple monochrome process. When you shoot in b&w, it’s another way to look around you, your eye is trained to see the contrast and the structures, and your brain reacts differently. And it’s also a practical choice, b&w films are way more practical to develop. I like color films too but I don’t have enough time to devote to it.
Then, film photography is irreplaceable. I mean I’m not against new technologies and I appreciate what some people do with digital photography, but as long as you still have the choice, as long as it doesn’t mean eradicating what was before, i.e. the alternative ways. And that’s what film photography has become nowadays, an alternative way.
Finally, film photography fits more with how I try to act, taking time to estimate what surrounds you, making choices. It has nothing to do with being “old fashioned” or with this “vintage” trend or anything like that. Digital cameras are really practical, preview screens, settings for everything, and again, some people do great stuff with digital… but it gives so much freedom to the photographer that you don’t concentrate on what you shoot anymore, and WHY you shoot it, because you don’t have to make a choice. I guess I prefer what takes time to build.
I’m glad to see this growing interest for film now. We cannot let it die, and it’s also thanks to people like you Chang, you are doing an amazing work, thank you for that.
q: Any special techniques when you develop your own film?
a: No. I prefer concentrating more on printing under the enlarger than on developing, it’s more important to me. Most of the time I give my film to people I trust to develop it (thank you so much Gosia), which allows me to spend more time under the enlarger and behind the camera. It’s a choice I had to make and it has worked until now. I quite like overdeveloped films, with strong black density and increased grain, but it doesn’t fit all subjects.
q: Coffee or tea?
a: Oh, the most important question! Tea, definitely… I drink so much tea every day, I’m worse than an English person. It depends on the season: smoked black tea, strong, no sugar, for cold days. Green tea in summertime. If anyone wants to offer me a drink you know what to order!

q: Any new music to recommend?
a: Mostly the last bands I saw live… Touche Amore’s last album “Parting the sea between brightness and me” has a great energy, last album from Enablers is the most recommended music for a night time, it’s called “Blown realms and stalled explosions”. And check the new album from Listener, called “Wooden heart”, it’s really amazing and touching, you can listen to it here: http://listener.bandcamp.com/album/wooden-heart .
