q: Two things that strike me when I view your photography is the use of colour and placement of objects. What are you trying to show with these pictures?
a: In my pictures I really feel like I’m trying to capture a fractured kind of reality, I never initially set out to make work that was “collaged” it just kind of came out through exploring. I really view the work as taking and bits and pieces from a bunch of different sources and putting them together again, a kind of way of examining culture through dissection and reassembling pieces. I also want the images to be very colorful and appealing and I think that has evolved out of doing mostly black and white during undergrad and also because of my source material—fashion magazines— is so colorful. What I’m trying to do is show people a different way of looking at things than they might normally see them and I think photography is the perfect medium for that, I’ve also been very influenced by plants and the symbolism behind them.

q: Upcoming projects or ideas?
a: I’ve been working on some editorial type work that I’ve been pretty excited about—collaborations with art and photography zines— and I’ve been using people during these collaborations. The addition of people to the work has been a new experience, getting used to directing a person around a set sometimes makes me feel outside my comfort zone but I know it is important to continue to push myself to try things that put me in that zone—that was an important lesson I learned this year. I will also continue to make work but hopefully on a larger scale.

q: Do you prefer chickens or ducks?
a: I prefer chickens over ducks. I think because I hardly ever see ducks, not enough lakes where I live.

q: Any music to recommend?
a: I recommend Molly Nilsson, I stumbled across her recently, she has this rough production quality about her music that I love and she always sounds like you are hearing her through a giant wind turbine, the way her voice vibrates.
